Plumbing in the Home - Plumbing Leak?

Expert: eric maxon - 4/18/2004

Question
I noticed that my water meter SOMETIMES runs when no one is using the water. Sometimes the meter registers 1/2 gallon in one hour, and some times none at all. The toilets are ok. I can not find a leak anywhere.  Thank you for your help.

Answer
Thanks for the question.  If the water meter runs, then you have a leak somewhere.  I would start by checking all the toilets, faucets, and hose bibs,  Make sure nothing is dripping - at all.  Then turn off the cold water supply to the hot water heater.  Check the water meter.  If it is still moving then you have a cold water leak.  If you do, then its time to call a pro
