Plumbing in the Home/Compression Union

It sounds like I got the same guy as Bill. I have a Watts A-110 962-P Ander-Lign Compression Union that comes with the male flare piece but the saleman told me not to use it.  It does not seem to work.  The Watts web site is terrible.  Any help would be appreciated.
