I just had a Bosch installed last week.  I had an air gap and went with my installer's advice to remove because he said it was a pain to reconnect and I did not need it.  I really regret it.  Now my dishwasher smells terrible.  I am calling to get reattached.  I live in AZ.  I do not know if the heat has anything to do with the smell.  I also have a disposal and smell may be associated with this combination.  I hope this helps.  I would get the air gap.

Always install the dishwasher with an approved air-gap.  The rim of the sink is the point were sewage may backup and over flow.  If you use a loop under the sink the sewage could still back into the hose and possibly into your dishwasher.  Plumbing codes require you never make a direct connection between the sewer and potable lines.  The air-gap the only way to accomplish this.
