Most States require established criteria, example (seven years or more practical experience as a master plumber) and you must prove your experience just to be eligible to take the exam. Not as easy as one thinks.

Well, the very first thing you must do is to buy a current code book. It's good to have a J lic, but that does not Elliot all. You must also get your cert from ICC, attend classes put on by ICC and get certified by them. There are classes all year long covering all aspects of plumbing , nat gas , plan check reading. It's also very important to deal with the public in a professional manner if you expect to get to repeat service. Use your code book to work you through any problems you can't figure out on your own. There is no better teacher than hands on. After 28 years as an inspector, I could go on  and on about different sections of the code book , which should be your bible. The amount of knowledge and info is incredible. Don't be ashamed to ask your  supervisor for help. That's the best way to learn. Sections of the code book need to be looked up and worked out in your head. This includes, waste vents nat. gas and so on. You will spend all your off time reading the code book , but it will pay off for you in the long run. Also ICC sells an Ilustrated pictorial that will be a God send. It has pics, diagrams, theories new codes ect. Good Luck
