Plumbing in the Home - installing a bathtub

Expert: speedball1 - 3/14/2004

Question
I'm installing a porcelain-on-steel bathtub.  The problem is that I cannot get it to sit level on the stringer.  I've used plenty of shims but it still rocks.  What would happen if I drilled holes through the flange to screw it to the studs?  Do you think the porcelain would chip?  If you have any ideas about making it level, I would appreciate it.

Answer
Hi Jeff,  Oh yeah! You betcha the porclain will chip.  Put the drill away.  When we set a tub we cut 2X4's just a tad higher( 1/8") then the inside lip and nail them to the wall studs. The tub then rides on the 2X4's at the wall and the apron in front.  We don't use shims.  If you still need more support you can take metal washers and wood screws to secure the lip to the studs.  Do not tighten them down so much that the porclain fractures. I've never had to use washers to hold the tub, once you connect the tub waste and overflow to the trap It ain't going nowhere.   Hope this helps and thank you for rating my reply.  Tom
