Question Recently, we had the plumber work on our toilets. He said that they had a build-up of lime, which had caused the problem of not having the paper go down when we flushed the toilet. Is there any way we can prevent this lime build-up in the future? We live in an old house--125 yrs. old. Thank you. Irene
Answer Hi Irene,
Back in Wisconsin growing up in my fathers plumbing shop we used to have to pull the toilet and boil out the lime with muriatic acid. Big mistake! While the acid boiled away the lime OK the fumes scarred my lungs. Not to the point of hurting them but enough to show up on Xrays. I had a terrible time convincing my health insurer that I didn't have TB. I know of nothing outside of a whole house water filter that will prevent lime build up.
