Podiatry - Ankle Pain

Expert: Dr. Marc Katz - 4/24/2008

Question
About four years ago, I fall in a hole in my back yard and twisted my left ankle.  I was told nothing was broken and the ligaments were torn.  They placed me in therapy for two months.  Since then, when wearing shoes other then ankle boots, my left ankle will hurt. The pain is on the outer side of the ankle, runs across the front of the ankle, into the top of the foot and sometimes in my toes.  The pain also runs into the outer side of my shin and sometimes into the outer knee area.  When flexing the foot/toes up, I have tightness in the ankle and foot. When flexing the foot to the outer side, I feel pain in the ankle and tightness in the calf.  I am not on my feet much doing the day, but by the time I return from work, the pain is there.  I would love to walk for exercise, but I hate the pain.  What do you recommend/advise me do to?  Are there certain shoes I should be wearing?  I've tried a splint at night and sometimes that helps, but the majority of times it doesn't.  Please advise.

Answer
Hi Jeanie,

After a severe ankle injury, your foot and ankle may be out of alignment and cause ongoing pain.  You need to see a podiatrist and have an evaluation for a pair of orthotic devices or an ankle stabilizing orthosis.  Another common problem following an ankle injury is entrapement of a nerve.  This can cause radiating pain to the toes and up the leg.

I would start with the orthotics and stretches.  Consider an injection if their is a trapped nerve.

I often perform cryosurgery for injuries of the nerves associated with ankle sprains.  See my site www.tampacryosurgery.com
