Question
I am a 54 female. In August I had surgery to for a Mortons Neuroma. My surgeon performed the procedure from the bottom of my foot. After four weeks when I was wearing my own shoe and doing pretty good, I started having pain in the top of my foot. After two and have weeks of pain an MRI showed a stress fracture to the medial cuneiform bone. I was put in a Cam Walker for three weeks. The second day without that boot I was in extreme pain again. I also noticed a spot on the top of my foot that was swelled ,red and tender. My Dr. did an xray.I know that xrays don't show stress fractures but he was pretty sure just by my symptoms it was another stress fracture. I guess I'm concerned why I would get two stress fractures when I don' dance or play sports. He didn't think it was osteoporosis. I am back in the boot and I have to go to work next week with the boot. I work on concrete floors for eight hours a day.What do you think? Should I be concerned? I like my Dr. but sometimes I think he thinks I'm being a baby about this. By the way the second stress fracture is in the second metatarsal near the toe. Also this boot is very heavy and sometimes puts too much pressure on the top of my foot.Thank You!

Stress fractures are not normal without increased activity or weight. Sounds like a plantarflexed or long metatarsal that may be taking more weight. You should seek orthotics/orthoses that are able to relieve the pressure on the foot that seems to be causing these fractures. If you have gained weight or are heavy-that will exaggerate symptoms.
Sometimes physical therapy can help with the pain, swelling and healing time.
Don't think that you are a baby. Just because you have new pain does not mean that the doctor's caring and compassion should stop. Let him know about your feelings of concern and ask him for help.Ask him exactly what the cause of the stress fractures are. If he has no clue , then consider a second opinion. Sometimes the doctor can be a little removed-but needs to be reminded that's there is a person attached to the foot.
