Podiatry - foot pain

Expert: Dr George Tsatsos - 10/3/2009

Question
I'm writing this for my grandmother.  She's in her 70's.  All of a sudden the bottom of her feet turned bright pink and hurt.  She hasn't done or taken anything new.  Do you have any ideas of what it could be.

Thank you.

Answer
If when you press the skin and the pink goes away and comes back then it might be a circulation problem. If the color stays the same-think Athlete's foot that should respond to an anti-fungal cream,or dermatitis-that should respond to an anti-itch cream .If the pain is a burning pain think diabetes. Sometimes the foot hurts because there is less padding on the foot as you get older and depending on the shoes and floor. That will respond to shoes with more padding.
Less likely-Could also be a form of arthritis-which should respond to anti-inflammatories.
Most important depending on the level of pain and the possible diagnoses-you probably should have it looked at.
Hope this helps
Good Luck!
