Podiatry - Toe pain

Expert: Dr. Marc Katz - 5/15/2009

Question
Dr. Katz,

This concerns toe pain in the toe adjacent to my big toe.

History - I've never had any toe/foot problems.  About 2 months ago I banged my toe against the door.  It didn't feel too badly.  I walk my dog 3-4 miles per day.  I've been walking this much for 14 years and have never had any problem.  Suddenly, I started having toe pain after banging my toe.  I waited 4 weeks and then I saw my doctor and had an x-ray.  Results:  no fracture and no soft tissue changes.  However, there is some arthritis.  I am 59 years old.  I am currently waitng to see a podiatrist (2-week wait for my appointment).

My concern:  I don't feel like arthritis is causing this toe pain.  The area that hurts is the UNDERSIDE of the TOP part of the toe.  I can wiggle and move it without any pain.  But, if I so much as gently touch the skin area, the pain is really bad.  Even hurts when my sock or the blanket rubs against it.

Meanwhile, as I wait to see the podiatrist, I am still walking my dog.  I am wearing New Balance walking shoes, but it hurts when I press my toe down on the pavement.  It just doesn't sound like arthritic pain.  Would the skin hurt when touched if it were arthritis?

I am just looking for an opinion and some advice as I wait for my appointment.

Thank you so much for your time.

Penney

Answer
Hi Penney,

You may have arthritis but it sounds like you have soft tissue inflammation on the bottom of the toe and possibly compression or injury to some of the nerves.  It does not sound like typical arthritis pain but more like injury to the soft tissue.

Sincerely,
