Question
My husband has a Jones fracture and was perscribed a bone stimulator with a small quarter sized pad to apply over the site of the fracture. The rep for the company that supplies the machine did not seem sure of where to put it and the orthopedic surgeon is not available (and would not lower himself to answer such a "stupid" question). What are the external landmarks for the base of the 5th metatarsal. I have a general idea, but sure how to tell for sure.

Answer
Hi Shelly,

The best anatomical landmark is the 5th metatarsal styloid process.  Look at the 5th toe (pinkie toe) and follow the bone back to about the middle of the foot.  There's a bump on the outside of the 5th metatarsal called the styloid process.  Place the bone stim pad just to the inside of the bump on the top of the foot.  This is the area the bone stim should be placed.  You don't have to be exact with most bone stims as long as the pad is placed in the general area of the fracture.  Hope this helps, please let me know if you need anymore.

Sincerely,

Dr. Leslie Johnston, DPM
