Naming my favorite poets is really hard to do. There are American poets listed on one or more of the lists that you sent me. I have some favorite American poets, but I'll restrict myself to British poets only.
NOTE: These are just MY favorites.
William Shakespeare -- Not only are there outstanding poems included in his plays, but his
sonnets are among the greatest poems ever written.
T. S. Eliot: Although Eliot was born in the United States, he became a citizen of England. My favorite single poem is his "Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock."
Dylan Thomas: The best known Welsh poet. Much of his poetry has an "earthy" quality; he wrote about subjects that are very "down to earth," much like the American Robert Frost.
John Donne: Probably the best "metaphysical" poet. His "meditations" combine a religious aspect with present-day things or events.
*** There are so many more. I have included only the ones I like for their poetry in general. The are many individual poems that I treasure -- written by different poets not mentioned here. For instance, the "war poetry" of Wilfred Owen is very moving and philosophical.
