About LG
Expertise
Hello, Dear Reader. My name is LG. I'm able to answer most of your questions about ALL POKEMON GAMES. Since I became an Expert in this category (+- 5 years ago), I became fascinated by the internal structure of Pokémon and I started to check all game info and all game research data. As a Pokémon Trainer, I know a lot about all game walkthroughs, stats, attacks, strategies, breeding, evolution and much more. If I don't know the answer, I'll look it up for you or I'll redirect you to one of my Fellow Experts. I hope to read you soon! :)

Experience
About ten years ago I started playing Pocket Monsters with my first game, Pokémon Red. I became addicted to the game and bought its equivalent, Pokémon Blue and later on the special version, Pokémon Yellow. After that, I bought all the games of Pokémon that were released for the Game Boy platform by pre - ordering them in my local shop. I'm still checking the data of the Pokémon Research today, even data from the old First Generation.

Question
how do you tell what set a pokemon card is from? How do you determine the value? My son has 428 older cards and wants to get rid of them.

Answer
Hi Debbie,

There is a system on the AllExperts.com - site called the Question Pool. Whenever a question is rejected by one of the Experts of a specific category (i.e. Pokémon), he is able to send that question into the Question Pool. All Pokémon Experts can enter this Question Pool and thereby can answer your question.

This is the first time I see your question appearing in the Question Pool and I have an answer on your question.

You can determine it's set by looking at two numbers in the right below corner of the card. I'll give you an example :

http://www.serebii.net/picture.php?TCG/Base/001-alakazam.jpg

The number you see is 1 / 102. It's an Alakazam. This means it's the 1st card of 102 cards in the set.

You can determine what set your son's cards belong to by going to this webpage :

http://www.psypokes.com/tcg/search.php

Click on " Name ", type in the name of the card (e.g. Alakazam) and you'll find what set your son's cards belong to by matching the number on your card and the info displayed on the search page.

Determining value depends on what rarity the card has. You can find a good explanation about rarity on this page :

I'm no expert when it comes to determining card's money value, so my advise is to ask it a collector. You probably find some collector's on the net. But it might be a good choice to keep the cards for now, because their money value will go up when time goes by.

Good luck and have fun! :)

~LG~
