Question Have problem with pond plants smelling swampy. I have them in containers with dirt and few rocks to keep them from tipping over. I also check daily to remove dead areas. What can I do to get rid of the smell?
Answer Hello Joan!
Pond Plants generally do not smell too good when removed from the pond, but there are a couple of things you can do to improve things a bit.
1) Increase aeration in the pond to let beneficial bacteria thrive
2) add beneficial bacteria to the pond to help eliminate decomposing organic matter
3) be sure to use aquatic planting baskets (they have holes to let oxygen containing water reach the roots
