Pond & Water Gardening - Goldfish Behavior

Expert: Eric Mathes - 5/19/2009

Question
I have four Goldfish, the second year they came out of hibernation with no problems about 2 months ago.  Last week all four hid at the very bottom for about two days.  One by one they came back up but were very scared of people, would not come to the front of the pond to be fed. After two days they went back down and hid.  It is now the third day and they have not come back up.  The water temperature has been between 65 and 75.  We have a problem at the end of the Fall with a Heron, do you think this may be causing them to be so stressful?

Answer
Hey Sue, it sure sounds like something scared them. If they are at the top and you walk around the pond and they go straight for the bottom then something has tried to get them. I have this problem all the time. I live in the middle of the woods and late at night I have seen cats and coons trying to get the fish. Thanks Eric
