Pond & Water Gardening - Goldfish and Carp

Expert: Eric Mathes - 5/21/2009

Question
Hi Eric
Thank you for your quick response.  The fish have not come to the surface now for over a week, they just stay at the bottom huddled together, I know my neighbour saw aq heron last year flying over, I also have foxes that come in to the garden.  I have a cat which drinks out of the pond the fish carry on eating while he is drinking, well they did.
I am really worried, how long can they go on like this for
Sue

Answer
Hey Sue thats a lot of wildlife around the pond I would be scared if I was a fish. I have seen cats trying to get fish out of my pond late at night. They are pretty good at it also. As long as they are not acting sick I wouldn't worry about it. Goldfish are pretty smart when it comes to staying alive. I live in the woods and I can;t keep Koi. Every time a coon walks around the pond they think they are getting feed and the coon just scoops them out. I have seen this with my own eyes. Goldfish don't so this. When I walk around my pond they go straight to the bottom. If the water is cold they won't move much either. We have had some cool nights in Ohio 2 days ago it was 36 degrees. Mine are not moving much. Hope this helps Eric
