Pond & Water Gardening - Pond pump

Expert: Eric Mathes - 5/21/2009

Question
Eric thank you in-advance I recently enlarged my pond and went with from a submersible pump to a external pump the pump pulls great for the first 5 to 10 minutes then loses its prime I will re-prime the pump and the same thing happens I will give you a verbal schematic. I have approximately four feet of 1.5 PVC a ball valve shut off with an 8 inch additional run to the strainer the discharge is also 1.5 about an 8 foot run on the return and it too has a ball valve. I quiet baffled as to why it keeps losing its prime.

Answer
Hey George, don't thank me to  fast, I am not that familiar with external pumps. I have always had submersibles but it has got to be losing its prime for a reason. Are you sure the pump is big enough to pump the volume of water you are pumping? Is the pump good? And make sure the pvc is not cracked sometimes it is hard to tell. If all that is right then its sucking are somewhere. Thanks Eric
