I lived in Brazil for many years and these plants are really easy.  They are not fussed about dirt/no dirt.  But they do need nutrients - if they turn yellow, feed them.  And most important: keep them relatively warm and LOTS of light.  It's usually the light level that causes them to fail indoors.
