Subject: 2001 pontiac sunfire starter ingaugeing while car is running

Question
Hi, I have a 2001 pontiac sunfire 2.2 liter we are having problems with the starter engaging while the car is running can you tell us where to start looking at.We have put a new starter on it and it still does it.Thanks so much

Answer
Hi Debra:

Did this car have a recall done for it yet? There was a recall for the ignition switch where a new relay was put in the starter wiring? If that relay was bad or if the contact in the ignition switch were bad it could cause this? Does it happne while the car is driving down the road or wqhen the car is in park? you could have an issue with the park switch on the transmission. This is a wierd one for sure but those are the most likely issues that I could think of.
