Pontiac Repair - 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix SE airbag deployment

Expert: Tim Hagan - 11/1/2009

Question
I rear-ended another car going about 45-50 mph I'm guessing; didn't have much time to brake by the time I saw her stopped to turn and my cruise was set at 60 mph. I was wondering where the airbag sensors are on my style of car because my airbags did not deploy. Contact was on the left front side of my car so it didn't damage the whole thing, but shouldn't they have deployed regardless of what area on the front of the car got hit?

Answer
no not necessarily, the air bags deploy based upon how fast the car comes to a stop when it hits something, if you hit the person in front of you but enough energy was transfered through the panels crushing then the air bags would not deploy.  However you will need to check any seat belts the were buckled as the pre tensioners in them are probably bad
