Pontiac Repair/air conditioning

I've had my '94 Sunbird for about ten years now. Shortly after we bought it, the air conditioner went out (no surprise there). Actually, my memory fails me on whether or not it actually "quit", but I remember for certain that it was making some kind of noise, and a mechanic said it would cost us about $1000 to fix it (I know that estimate was probably wildly over-exaggerated). The alternative would be to cut the belt. So that's what he did.

I've gotten pretty good at making repairs on our cars since then, so maybe the A/C is something I can fix. But I can't recall what was the actual problem. Based on how I've described it, what does the original problem with the A/C sound like to you?

Well with out seeing it I have no Idea. if it was making a funny should then chances are it was the compressor making noise now if it was just the clutch not a big issue if it's internal to the compressor some times they explode and put metal though the whole system and they are a mess after that. if there is still a charge in the a/c system it's not a dso it your self repair the system needs to be drained and then a repair made and then the system get recharged. those charge in a can you can buy at Wal*mart are jumk in order for a system to get refilled it need dto be drawn down on a vacuum pump to remove all the moisture in the system and then recharged. so a part can be replaced if the system is empty but then it needed to be charged properly.
