QUESTION: Hello, i have a standard poodle that i bought at a 11 weeks and it weight only 11lbs. i have been trying my very best to feed him well and now he is 16weeks and weighs 24lbs. Any suggestions or he is just going to be on the smaller side of a standard poodle? i am wondering what he might weight at i year old. thanks

ANSWER: Hello Commy,
Though I can't estimate your dogs weight at a year old, I can tell you that a Standard Poodle can take up to a year or more to get to its full weight and the way he looks now is not necessarily what he will look like in a year.
At 16 weeks old, you should be feeding your dog 2-3 times a day and he should be eating about 2 1/2-3 cups per day. You can mix some canned food into his dry food if you want, but don't overdo it because you don't want to stress his hips. You might also make sure that you are feeding a high quality dog food such as Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Nutro Max, or Bil-Jac. If you would like information on any of these foods, type the name into your search engine and it should pull the website up on the dog food of choice.

QUESTION: Thanks kim, so do you think she is underweight for 24 lbs at 16 weeks? Actually i feed him twice a day and four cups of ultra nutru holistic diet-puppy large breed. Any other suggestions?

Hello again,
No, actually that isn't too much underweight for a Std Poodle. Dogs tend to go through a lanky stage around 16 weeks of age and they look all leg and gawky. Give your dog a few more weeks to see if he fills out some.
If by then he is still looking small, you can try my Dog diet that will be sure to put some weight on him. Like I said though, you don't want to put too much weight on his hips while they are forming. It can do lasting damage and can cause hip problems when he is older.
