Question Is a 5 month old poodle too young to breed? When is the appropiate time for a poodle to breed?
Answer Hello Mirna,
YES YES YES!! You should never breed any dog until they are at least 2 yrs old. A dog that is younger than 2 yrs old isn't mature enough to carry puppies to term. The puppies can suffer as can the female, as her body struggles to mature enough to take care of the puppies and herself.
A male can breed at one year of age as his sperm have had a chance to build up.
Both dogs also need to be tested for genetic problems and to be sure that they are both healthy enough to breed.
I hope this helps you some and that you wait to breed your dog until he/she is at the appropreate age.
If you have other questions for me about breeding, whelping or raising puppies, or other Poodle questions in general, please feel free to ask me.
