Poodles - Poodle licking and gaging

Expert: Kim Wingate - 6/17/2009

Question
My 2 year old standard poodle just started licking the carpet, blankets etc... when he lays down and is now gaging, not much of an apetite at all and one eye is watery and a little goopy.  could he have something stuck in his throat or allergies?  he is not licking or biting at himself at all, just things.  He smacks his lips and swallows quite frequently.  Any ideas of what is wrong?  Thanks so much, Jackie

Answer
Hello Jackie,
I am not sure what could be causing your dog to lick like this.  It could be that he has something in his throat, or he could be trying to vomit.

You might try checking in his mouth to see if there is a foregin object in his throat, but chances are that you won't see anything.
Think back and try to remember if you gave him anything that could cause a problem like this.

Try coating his food with some oil.  Use Olive Oil or Canola Oil if you have it because its more healthy for the dog.  It will coat his throat and may help if there is anything in his throat.

If he still keeps licking the floor and gaging, you may want to call your Vet.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.

Thanks,
Kim
