Question
I feel like a new mother.  I just adopted a retired 4 year old poodle from a breeder and I understand she is very shy however I can't get her to eat or drink and I'm really beginning to worry She just wants to stay in her cage or lay on the rug  I do take her outside and play with her and she does become a little more frisky  I'm really worried about the eating and drinking  Thank You

Answer
Hello Patty,
Congratulations on your new adoption.
First, depending on how long ago you got her, she might just still be adjusting and might need a couple more days. Next, I would put her crate up, or at least limit her using the crate during the day so that she can't stay in there all the time.  Offer her canned food in small bites throughout the day so that she doesn't lose weight or energy by not eating, and try to spice up her water by adding ice cubes, or if it comes to it, chicken broth (just enough to add flavor).

When you are in the house with her, encourage her to come out and play by getting down on her level and playing with her down there.

You can also try the Doggie Exam Exercise on her.
Start with her in your lap on her back.  Rub her tummy until she will relax with you.  Once she will relax on her back, you can start the exam part.  Get her used to you going over her head (ears, eyes, and mouth), move down her legs and toes, and then over the rest of her body.
This is excellent for developing a relationship with your dog.  It helps her trust you, shows her that you are dominate over her in a non-threatening way, and helps her know that you are able to handle her in any way you want to without her resisting.

Give this a try and if you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.

Thanks for using AllExperts.com,
Kim
