Poodles - TOY POODLE

Expert: Kim Wingate - 7/1/2009

Question
My toy poodle is 55 days pregnant today and our male toy poodel continues sniffing her and tried to mount her last night.  Is this normal?

Answer
Hello Jennifer,
Aren't all males like that?  :)  Yes, its normal for the male to want to mount her because her hormones are going wild right now and she must smell pretty interesting to him.  Try to keep them apart because he can transmit germs into her if he actually penetrates her and that wouldn't be good for the puppies.

Your female should be whelping soon.  Females are preg. for 63 days give or take.  There are some signs to let you know that she is getting ready.
She might make a nest and act like she is caring for puppies already (some females use toys and lick them like it was a puppy), she will get a white substance on her nipples, and if you take her temp regularly, it will drop from 101.5 (a dogs normal temp) to around 98.0.  When it drops to 98.0 she will deliver within 24 hours.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions about this, or whelping, puppy care, or other Poodle questions in general, please feel free to ask.

Kim
