Subject: What size level to use

Question
I have learned so much from this forum.  I purchased and moved an 8ft olhausen
and am planning to refelt and reassemble it.  I would like to get the starrett level
but would like to know which size is best suited for pool table leveling.  Thanks
again.

Answer
Hi Bill,

Glad to hear you've picked up a couple of things here. Working on pool tables provides for a better understanding of the mechanics of the game and not only gives you a sense of accomplishment but also increases your confidence at the table during play.

When I have referred to the Starrett machinist's levels I have meant the Starrett Series 98 models. They are available in various sizes from four to eighteen inches.

For leveling slate on a pool table I like the twelve inch model best (Starrett 98-12). Although other sizes are equally accurate I find smaller ones more tedious to position and larger ones unnecessarily expensive. The size and weight of the twelve inch model is substantial enough to stay in place while subtle leveling adjustment are made. But if your budget doesn't allow for a twelve inch model the 8 inch model will work nicely too. Both have cross test vials to allow checking both directions without moving the level which is helpful. Shop around on the Net for prices.

Play well and enjoy,

Bill
