Expert: Dan Werner Date: 7/14/2008 Subject: group selection in 8-ball
Question After the break is made, before a groups is selected, can a player having his turn of play pocket both the group of balls(solids and strips) and then decide his group with the final ball he has potted? or the first ball he pots decides his group selection?
Answer Rules of 8 ball vary. For BCA rules, the table is open after the break no matter what. You get have to call your shots and you get stripes when you pocket the first striped ball you make. If you don't make anything legally, then it is still open.
In APA rules for 8 ball, you are stripes if you made one on the break. If you made at least 1 from each group on the break, then it is open. You get stripes when you make one after the break. If you happen to make a stripe and a solid after the break, then it is still open since you don't have to call your pocket.
