Question
I need to move out of state and I want to take my pool table.  It is a modest table, "WINNERS CHOICE" from REC WHSE 4x8.  I read a similar Q/A on this and think it may be good enough, but I wanted to know if you had specifics on this particular table.  Also, what is the best way to secure the slate when moving/storing?  I do plan to have a pro re-assemble, but I can't get an appt in time for moving to disassemble.

Answer
Hi Adam,

Modest by some standards perhaps but certainly well worth moving and nice to play on too. Glad you're not leaving it behind.

I've not taken one of those apart but they look like pretty "customary" construction. Vertical pocket bolts going into the metal post of the #6 style pocket come out first. Pockets can't be removed until the vertical rail bolts come out. Rails come off and then the cloth comes off (with much patience) to get to the slate bolts that screw into the frame. Three pieces of one inch thick slate (don't drop these on your toes).

Store the slate flat if you have a spot for it. Each piece will be about 32 x 48 inches. If there is a wooden frame backing on the slates leave them on and stack the three pieces up. I have a dolly that I use to put the three pieces on so I can move them all at once by myself - very handy! I recommend a dolly. Slate will collect moisture so if you have to store in a garage it wouldn't hurt to wrap them in plastic and tape it up.

As far as moving the table my only important advice is keep the slates on the bottom, flat, and secure them so they don't have chance of sliding around.  I've received slates shipped in heavy boxes and then strapped to a pallet with that heavy duty plastic material stretched around them several times. But if you don't have a way to move all three pieces strapped to a pallet it would be a good idea to put a piece of some rubber padding material between them so they won't slip around easily and lash them to the truck with.

Good luck with your move,

Bill
