Subject: 82 Porsche 924 starter removal

Question
82 924 non turbo will not crank, checked voltage going to starter is good, suspect bad starter. Haynes manual says to remove shield around starter but show no illustration and does not get into great detail. Where are the bolts that hold this shield in place? I can see the bottom ones, is there something I have to remove to get to the uppers? do I have to lift the engine to remove the shield to get to the starter? Can you recommend a better service manual?

Answer
Tim,
I had a 77 Martini Rossi however don't know if the 82 is alike it.

Looking at a OE parts schematic it looks like the "shield" is supported on a bracket on the top.  This bracket appears to have two 8 mm dia bolts that look like they pass through the shield and into the bracket with nuts at the other end (sounds vague however so is the schematic), on the shield side closest to the engine the shield looks like it has one 8 mm dia bolt holding it to the block.  ..... You got a mirror and a good drop light?

Best service manual is the "Shop Manual" ; what the authorized dealerships used; you can find these used manuals for sale in forums, swap meets, auctions or downloadable as pdf on some websites which i can't recommend.
