Pot Bellied Pigs - Dry Skin

Expert: Patricia Morrisroe - 11/2/2009

Question
I have a pbp that is 10 years old. She has always had this dry flaking skin. I use a special shampoo with Novsome microvesicles in it called Derma Klenz for scaley dermatitus. And also use a coal tar spray mist. Doesn,t seem to ever clear up. I do some brushing also. Can you suggest a lotion of some kind? Thanks, Patty

Answer
Hello,
The dry skin is common in PBPs.
You need to start with a good supplement that can work from the inside out.
Infinity plus carries a product called Coat and Skin Supplement.  It is formulated just for Pot Bellied Pigs.  You just sprinkle it over the feed once a day.  In your case I would use it twice a day for a month and then go to once a day.
Also try the Topical Coat and Skin they carry.  It can be use topically as well as over their feed.
Keep up the brushing also and don't over shampoo as that has a tendency to dry the skin out even more.
You can find the infinity plus products at royaldandie.com on the product page.
You might try changing feeds also.  Try the adult chow and Vit/Min supplement as well.  That way you know that all of your pigs needs are being meant.
Good luck,
Patty
