Presbyterians - The Pope

Expert: Chris Larimer - 8/17/2009

Question
Hi Chris,

Do the majority of Presbyterians hold the view that The Pope is the anti-christ as per (Paisley) in the North of Ireland and that Catholicism is the enemy of the protestant people or would this be the minority view?
Also, how can this man be a so-called man of peace..(reverand) etc when he espouses such hatred toward fellow-man?

Brendan,
Dublin.

Answer
Brendan,

The Westminster Confession of Faith, which is the theological statement that most Presbyterians around the world hold to, does anathematize the papacy as antichrist. However, very few sects of presbyterianism actually hold to that view. Most national presbyterian churches have amended the Confession by removing that section, or by appending an explanation of it as a historical position that was forged in the fires of religious warfare - both on the Continent and in England.

As for Paisley, while I'm familiar with his theology, I am ignorant of his politics. I would suggest you look to someone else for more information there. Or, better yet, let his record speak for itself.
