Question
QUESTION: hi i work with a designjet5500ps printer. sometimes when i am plotting multiple copies of a file, in the middle of the run, the printer prints about 4 to 6 inches of the next row, then just stops, and i have to restart it. the web browser seems to run really slow sometimes before it stops. also sometimes when i have sent a job through the web browser and the display reads ready and i hit print. the plotter seems delayed then when it starts to printthe display reads ready still and not prepairing print heads or printing then stalls and i have to restart. again

ANSWER: hi are you getting any error messages on the plotter? also you may want to check out your network card on the plotter that can cause communication issues resulting in weird problems like your having.

let me know if of any error codes or messages your getting

thanks simmie

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: I'M NOT GETTING ANY ERROR MESSAGES AT ALL,HOWEVER THE PLOTTER IS ON THE MAIN NETWORK WITH THE REST OF THE WORK GROUP COMPUTERS, AND NOT DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO ONE COMPUTER ONLY.SO ALL THE WORKGROOUP COMPUTERS CAN USE THE WEB BROWSER TO SEND FILES, WE ARE A SMALL COMPANY. WE HAVE A FIREWALL ROUTER FOR INTERNET. PINGING THE PLOTTER IS 0MS WITH LOOK@LAN AND PRETTY SMOOTH. THE BROWSER FOR THE PLOTTER SAYS PROCCESSING BUT THE PRINTER JUST SAYS READY, ALSO WHEN THE PLOTTER FREEZEZ IN THE MIDDLE OF A RUN THE PLOTTER SCREEN IS STUCK ON READY, BUT IT ACTUALLY STARTS TO PRINT, AND PRINTS ABOUT 4-6 INCHES OF THE NEXT RUN BEFORE STOPPING.IT LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING IN THE PLOTTER STOPS WORKING AND THE PRINTER EMPTIES ITS PRINT BUFFER THEN STOPS.
OR THE PRINTER GETS SOMETHING TO PROCCESS IN ITS MEMORY AND THEN IS TO BUSY TO SEND INSTRUCTIONS TO THE HEADS OR SOMETHING. ALTHOUGH NO ONE IS SENDING ANY FILES.
ONE MORE THING I HAVE NOTICED THAT IF I SEND A FILE THROUGH THE BROWSER AND PUT "HOLD"= NO  INSTEAD OF YES , THE PLOTTER USUALLY CRASHES, IT NEVER USED TO DO THIS. I HAVE DOWNLOADES THE LATEST FIRMWARE TO MY KNOWLEDGE AND POSTSCRIPT DRIVER FOR THE MAC. I USE INDESIGN CS3.

Answer
hi if the problem it actually with the plotter itself, cant really be sure because there isnt aspecific error code at the plotter, but if its the plotter the things to look at are the nic card, firmware,  memory, hardrive, and main board.  and your not gonna know until you start replacing things and the issue is corrected.

i would dbl check things on the network side first could even try hooking the plotter up to a stand alone computer and see how it performs, if eveything goes good then either there is a possible issue with the nic card or network, and you can pretty much rule out alot of the other things mentioned.

hope this helps
