Private Investigations and Personal Security/stealing employees

I read that a store manager might hire a private investigator to "determine if employees are stealing merchandise or information"
1) What might lead a store owner to suspect theft is going on?
2)What is one way an investigator might determine who was stealing?
3)Might the investigator get hired as an employee to overhear or see something?
I thought a twist to the story might be that the store owner's son is stealing to support a gambling or drug habit?

1) Usually a discrepancy between what there is in stock or that has been sold compared to current inventory. Or it could be a significant decrease in sales and after audit, concerns with the amount being sold compared to revenue earned.

2) Cameras

3) Absolutely.  Undercover Corporate investigation is a big business and happens a lot....

Take care.
