Private School - tax deduction for family payment of tuition

Expert: Michael Wall - 10/26/2009

Question
My children go to a private school, but due to job loss, we are unable to make the payments.  My sister in law has volunteered to make the payments rather than see them go to public school.  Is this tax deductible for her since it's not for her children?

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Jeannie,

While I am not a tax professional, from what I have read, no, she would not be able to deduct it.  See this link for a bit more:

Read all the comments for some interesting alternatives that are proposed by other readers.  I don't know anything about them, but perhaps you can do some research.

Best of luck,

Michael
