Question
I was wondering what the numbers on a golf ball reposent ie: red and black numbering.

Thanks Lorelei

Answer
Dear Lorelei, thanks for the question.  The colors of the numbers usually represent the compression of a golf ball.  Black usually indicates a 100 compression and Red indicates a 90 compression.  I say usually because some brand names have been known to buck the trend in an effort to be different.  Compression is basically the tightness or hardness of a golf ball.  100 is harder than 90 by around 10%...in other words the 100 ball will compress less when hit.  Some players like a softer ball, 90, so that it stays on the club a little longer for better spin.  Other players might like a harder feel for better distance.  I will say this, only quite good golfers with really notice. As for the numbers themselves...they are simply a reference. "I'm playing a titleist 4 today..."  while your partner is playing the same ball, but a number 2...simply for keeping better track.  Good luck and remember...

Love the game,
skipper
