AboutDave Wolf Expertise Hi everyone. I am 32 years old, and have been a wrestling fan ever since I can remember. My earliest memories of pro wrestling come from the old AWA back in the early 1980's. At the time, the AWA was the only wrestling I got on TV, but that soon expanded to the WWF(WWE)and NWA(WCW), and even World Class Championship Wrestling for a while.
I feel I have a good knowledge of wrestling and can help you out with pretty much any question you have. If I don't know the answer off hand, I am not afraid to do a little research, whether it be through the internet, or from other various personal resources I have. I am proud of the fact that I have now broken the 1000 answers barrier, which is the most in this category.
I generally check my email several times a day, so any question asked is usually answered within 24 hours, or much sooner. The only exception to this might be the weekends, where I may take a little longer to get back to you.
****Due to the number of questions I get regarding pro wrestling schools and getting into wrestling, I am no longer answering questions related to these subjects. There are times when I've gotten the same question asked 4 or 5 times in one day. It's not that they're bad questions, but from my end, it just gets old answering the same question over and over again. Instead, please see some of my previous answers, or you can ask another expert on the site***
Experience I don't have any first hand experience in the world of pro wrestling, but I have been a fan for as long as I can remember, and spend a lot of time reading up on the subject, whether it be from magazines, books, dirt sheets, or websites.
Education/Credentials None, really. Just a long time fan.
Question Hi Dave, my name is Aaron and I am a huge fan of wrestling in general but also of the old World Championship Wrestling and Ted Turner because he made some of my favourite movies and because he owns many of my favourite old classic war movies. I have been trying for about three or four years to find out if Ted Turner owned WCW after he was merged with Time Warner in I believfe the year was 1996 when they merged. I would really like to know what was Turners role in WCW wrestling when he merged with Warner Brothers and what was Time Warners role in WCW wrestling, or in other words what did Turner and Jamie Kellner who I believe was the head of Warner Brothers at the time WCW was sold to WWE each contribute to the WCW wrestling company. Dave I cannot thank you enough for helping me with this very important and I believe very good question. Thank You:Aaron Wake P.S. Marry ChristMas and Happy Holidays Dave
Answer Hi Aaron.
Ted Turner was still head of his networks after the merger with Time Warner. However, Time Warner actually owned WCW, so they pretty much called the shots. Turner liked having wrestling on his networks, but Time Warner really did not. They really did not support wrestling that much. Because of that, Turner really didn't have much support in keeping WCW alive. Turner was much more active with WCW before the merger.
Jamie Kellner eventually became CEO of Turner Broadcasting. At the time, Eric Bischoff was trying to buy WCW, and apparently had a deal in place. The deal also would have kept WCW on TBS or TNT.
Kellner killed the deal. He said he didn't mind selling WCW, but he didn't want it on his network. It made no sense for Bischoff to buy WCW without having a TV deal in place. And that pretty much ended up being the end of WCW.
If you would like more info about this time period, I would recommend reading Eric Bischoff's book, "Controversy Creates Cash". It was released a couple of months ago, and I thought it was a pretty good book. Turner is mentioned quite a bit in the book.
Thanks for the question. I hope I helped a little bit. Feel free to contact me again.
