Problems using AOL - lost archived aol emails

Expert: Steve - 11/26/2008

Question
Please help my husband and I with an ancient argument about lost archived
aol emails. We used to subscribe to aol - but now we have a free email with
aol.

Question: Anyway, was the use of different versions of aol (5.0, 6.0, 7.0) back
and forth simultaneously result in losing entire weeks and months of emails,
or would there be another explanation?  I never had this problem with
missing emails under my username

A few years ago - we brought a computer tech to our home to try to help us
retrieve the lost sections of aol email from my husband's account. We are
talking weeks and months of emails. What we learned during that visit from
the tech guy is that aol had their own software for storing email and it could
not saved and retrieved in any other way. I was not having any trouble with
my emails on my account.

The only difference in how my husband and I managed our use of email was
that I always used the most current version of aol to open my emails - even if
it was slow to come up or behaving oddly. My husband would get frustrated
with the latest version of aol at that time and go into the system and open
older versions of aol to send emails.  Over time, we observed that entire
weeks and even months of his emails were missing - since he relied on this
for his business, this was a problem.

We brought in the tech to see if we could retrieve and restore these emails
(after contacting AOL directly on tech support without success on several
occasions). This tech was unable to help us but did show where aol archived
our emails but they all had an different ending - .pst or something like that.

Anyway, was the use of different versions of aol (5.0, 6.0, 7.0) back and forth
the source of the problem, or would there be another explanation? Again, I
never had this problem with missing emails on my side

Thanks, Valerie

Answer
hi valerie,
AOL no matter what version, you should not lose any e-mails, i cannot igure why you have lost e-mails, but it used to be their server would hold up to 1000 e-mails, then any e-mail would bounce back to the sender. I wish i had the answer, but unfortunately i do not. By the way, version 7.0 and 8.0 were the best they made.
