Problems using AOL - high speed internet

Expert: Bill Connelly - 4/25/2003

Question
hello,
thank you first of all for taking my question. i currently have an AOL dial up internet service. However, i'm considering getting high-speed internet service since i really  need a faster and more reliable service for my home office.

what are my alternatives? i have heard about dsl, cable modems etc. i dont really know much about these and do not know which one is best for me. i would truely appreciate your oppinion and advice.

i live in a suburb of new york city and have various high speed choices. i'm also lucky enough to work for a company that is willing to pay for this service.

thanks,
Atam

It may depend on what is offered where you live.  DSL requires you to live relatively close to a phone company that offers it.  And not all cable companies have completely wired their cable users for cable internet access.

If both are available to you, I would choose DSL.  The main reason being you are not "sharing" the line line with others as you do with cable.  Typically, during peak hours (mid-afternoon to early evening), cable speeds go way down as others are logging on.  You don't get this with DSL.  I also think DSL is more secure, although that really isn't a huge concern of mine, but for some, it may be.  Cable and DSL are usually about the same price, which doesn't seem to be an issue for you.

Here's a link to a few articles that address Cable vs. DSL:

Also, AOL's high speed access is quite good (they use DSL).  If that is offered in your area, I would feel comfortable recommending that.  Go to keyword HIGH SPEED to learn more and check availability.

Good luck!
