DESPITE THIS WARNING, I STILL GET DOZENS OF THESE QUESTIONS A WEEK ABOUT THIS SO MY FIRST PIECE OF ADVICE TO YOU IN THIS SITUATION IS TO LEARN HOW TO FOLLOW SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS OR YOU WILL NEVER BECOME A PLAYER!!! I can answer and / or give opinions on most generic UK Premier League football questions regarding teams, transfers, tactics, history and success. Naturally, I have a good understanding of the rules of football but my responses in that area will not be as technical as someone who is a referee or match official for example.

Question
How long are the halves of a Soccer game?

Answer
Brianna,

Each half of a soccer match lasts 45 minutes plus any time to be added on for injuries etc. which is commonly referred to as stoppage time.

Therefore, the total length of a normal match is 90 minutes plus stoppage time at the end of each half (which is normally about 3 minutes at the end of each half).

Additionally, depending on the match / competition / result; there may be an additional period of play to decide events and this is known as Extra Time.  Extra time is played in certain circumstances (usually knock out competitions) where the result is still tied after 90 minutes and a winner must be decided.  Therefore, after the completion of normal play, an additional 30 minutes is then played which is split into two 15 minute periods.  Typically, if the result is still undecided - in this situation the game may go to penalties (or in some competitions it may result in a complete replay of the match at a later date).  There are some competition formats where golden goal is played which means the first team to score in extra time is declared the winner and the match ends at that point.
