Question An elderly friend of mine allowed me to build a O.K.'d wood shed on her property to store my belongings. Is it possible to buy insurance for that shed and its contents separately from whatever she has for her home? What would it cost to insure $5-$10k of valuables?
Thank you
Answer Hi Diane,
The neighbors homeowner insurance policy would not cover your stuff at all, unless you were defined as an insured in the policy, and in this case you would not be.
I don't know of any carrier that will write coverage just for the shed and your contents, and even if they did, they would want a hefty premium for a small risk.
If you currently have home insurance and/or renter's insurance, then read your policy, you probably have coverage for your personal property any where in the world, but you will need to read policies, and look at exclusions too, better yet, call your agent/broker and let them clarify what your policy will or wont' cover.
As far as the shed, you can see if your current homeowner company can some how endorse this shed, but since it's not on the premises, it would be hard to get an underwriter to go along with it.
