Property & Casualty Insurance - sub agent licensing

Expert: Thom Brooks - 10/17/2009

Question
What is the difference between a sub agent and a "secretary" in an insurance agency?  Can you give me an outline of what one can legally do in an agency with/without a sub agents license?  Thank you so much for your help.  I am having trouble finding answers and we want to stay within the laws.

Answer
Jill, hello!

You need to contact the state insurance department or goggle their website and you will see the licensing department.  If you are in Georgia, the Limited Sub Agent can not bind the company, cannot work alone without a licensed agent and can only sell Personal Lines (not Commercial).  The secretary in an office does not have to be licensed and can accept premium payments, but cannot discuss, transact, or be involved in the effectuation of a contract.  They cannot solicit insurance.

Take care,

Thom Brooks
