Question
A vehicle is registered under my name but i do not drive the vehicle at all. My mother has a valid license and insured the vehicle under her name only, since she is the one driving it. Is this okay, or would there be some problems in the future?

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Julie,

Most insurance companies will only insure the vehicle in the name of the person to whom it is titled. There are a couple...Progressive is one...that don't care.

That being said, as the owner of the vehicle, you could very well be brought into a lawsuit if you mother were to have an at-fault accident causing serious injuries.  If that were the case, you would not have coverage under your policy because it excludes coverage for vehicles that you own but that are not insured under that policy.  You would also not have any coverage under your mother's policy because you are not named on the policy.

I think your current insurance situation is cause for serious concern.  I would highly recommend that you have your name added to your mother's policy.

I hope that helps.  Let me know if you have more questions.
