Property & Casualty Insurance - Clients Files

Expert: Hal McFarland, CIC, ARM - 11/2/2009

Question
For how long does Insurance Broker have do maintain and keep his clients files?

Answer
Tatyana,

The length of time an insurance broker is required to maintain and keep client files depends on the state within which he is licensed and operating.  Each state has its own set of laws governing the activities of insurance companies and broker/agents.

Rule-of-thumb:  At least 5 years.

Check with the Bureau of Insurance for the state within which the broker is licensed and conducting business.

Hal
