About Kristen Mulcahy, CIC
Expertise
My specialty is commercial insurance for business owners. I can answer questions regarding liability, property, auto, workers compensation, directors and officers, umbrellas and risk management for all types of businesses. Risk management or loss control, is taking measures to reduce the chances of a loss in the first place or, helping you prevent it from happening again. Insurance can be complicated and confusing and there are no stupid questions! I own a Risk Management company in New England that provides insurance consultations to business owners and sight inspections for insurance companies.

Question
I have a client that will be buying mobile homes for when a homeowner suffers a fire to their home. The mobile home will be set up in the homeowners yard.  I can't find an insurance company to write this exposure.  Foremost won't do it under their commercial rental program as the units are not in a fixed location.  Can you help?

Answer
Tom;

I'm sorry but I'm not familiar enough with carriers appetites to tell you who would write a policy like this. However, I will say that trying to find a homeowner type policy, in my mind, isn't the right direction. Forget for a minute that people will be living in these units, the units themselves are MOBILE. I would be talking to a company that insures motorhomes and RV's because that's basically the exposure. It's not a powered mobile unit, but neither are RV trailers. A very useful website when looking for specific or unique markets is www.ultimateinsurancelinks.com and if you can't find a resource there, look for an RV Dealers Association of some sort and see if they have an endorsed carrier on their website for other dealers. If a carrier will write an RV Dealer, chances are they'll take a look at your client.

I hope this has been helpful and if you have any other questions feel free to email me again.  Good luck!

Kristen
