Question
If MY car is titled to me but my 22 year old son drives it, is employed, lives outside of my home, and in fact in another city, can i insure it or Must I re-title and have him insure it?
It is MY car that I am allowing him to drive until he gets himself established.

Answer
Hi Laura,

If the car is titled in your name, then it should be insured in your name. Your son should be listed as a driver and the policy should be rated according to his age, marital status, and the location where the vehicle is garaged.

That being said, it's important to remember that as long as the vehicle is titled and insured in your name, YOU are the one that will be legally responsible for any liability issues that may arise as a result of the use of the vehicle. Since he is no longer in your household you have much less control over how the vehicle is being used. That may not sit well with some companies.

The bottom line is that you should be the one insuring it as long as it is in your name.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.
