Property & Casualty Insurance - Homeowners Insurance Cancellation

Expert: Jay K. Williams, AAI, AIP, CIC, CRM - 6/22/2009

Question
We have been notified by our insurance company of 25+ years that they are cancelling our policy due to three insurance claims over the past three years. Two of which were for scheduled items that were stolen. All three of these claims together were less than $8,000 in lieu of the tens of thousands of dollars that we have paid to this company over the years for auto, home, life, and boat premiums.

Can they do this? We have had more claims with our auto insurance and they are not canceling that. Now they are referring us to a high risk company.

Thank you in advance for your answer.

Answer
Hi Sue,

Unfortunately, the company can non-renew even if it was just one claim. I would agree with you that a company you've been insured with for 25+ years should work with you a little more here.  Perhaps the answer is a higher deductible.

Has your agent gone to bat for you on this issue?  They should be lobbying the company hard for some other action besides a non-renewal, especially given the amount of other insurance you have with this company.

I hope that helps a little.  Let me know if you have additional questions.
