Property & Casualty Insurance - becoming an insurance agent

Expert: Jay K. Williams, AAI, AIP, CIC, CRM - 6/10/2009

Question
I would like to become a property and casualty insurance
agent. I have absolutely no experience in this field. I live
in Miami- Dade Florida. I have worked in an attorney's
office for the past 5 years and have really good
understanding of legal terms, also, i'm really good with
computers. How would I go about becoming an agent? I have
the understanding that you have to take an exam, but then
again I have no idea where to start.

Answer
Hi Mercedes,

I've been a licensed agent here in FL for over 30 years...while I got here by accident, I wouldn't trade this profession for the world!

Here are a couple links that will help you get on your way.

An article on the qualifications:
http://www.faia.com/web/2005/09/how_can_i_qualify_to_become_a_general_lines_220_...

A link to the Department of Financial Services webpage:
http://www.myfloridacfo.com/agents/Licensure/index.htm

A link to the Study Manual and other study-related materials:
http://www.faiams.com/inside/studymanuals.aspx

As you'll see from some of this information, you'll need to complete pre-licensing courses before you can take the State Exam. Those courses should be available from Miami-Dade College.  The agent class is 200 hours and the customer representative class is 40 hours.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to write.
