Question
My sons house caught fire a few months ago.  They have been waiting on the insurance to settle with them.  Today they received a call from the insurance stating that they have found a trailer to replace the one that burned.  If it is not declared a total loss then why would they replace it instead of repair it? I obviously am at a loss as to how insurance works in these situations.  They told them they would send a partial check and when they receive notice that they have started the procedure of having the trailer moved in they would then send the rest of the check.. Now they are telling them they will have redo the contents list because it was not good enough.. Please help me so I can offer the kids some assistance.  What if the kids had decided to build a new home instead of purchasing a trailer?

Answer
Hello Rhonda,

Something is not right here.  I will need more info in order to guide you.  Who the insurance company is, the state where he loss occurred etc.  I have never heard of an insurance company replacing a trailer they chose for the insured.  This is absurd.  In the meantime, please advise your son not to sign ANYTHING until he gets guidance from someone on what his rights and choices are.

Please email me privately so I can email you my private information.

Thanks,
Deanna
