Property & Casualty Insurance - Auto Insurance

Expert: James R. Berliner, CPCU - 4/14/2004

Question
Hello Mr.Berliner,CPCU,
I've been a Master's Degree student for three years and haven't carried any auto insurance due to the fact that I haven't really driven much at all,(if that's an excuse?)
I'm going to work now and would like to carry just a basic liability automobile policy.
Can I get a liability policy that will also cover "Vehicle Theft"?...or will I have to get a "Comprehensive", separate, or "Full Coverage Policy"

 Thank you very much.

 Sincerely

 Mike Eidson, LAc.

Answer
Hi Mike,

You will need to purchase a basic auto insurance policy, and ask to have 'comprehensive' or 'Other than Collision'  (these are exactly the same thing) included in the policy. This is the name of the coverage that provides protection for the theft of your vehicle.  Any insurance advisor or agent can walk you through this at the time you are ready to purchase.
